Helpful Report abuse. I randomly chose this film and I knew nothing about it or the cast so did not know what to expect. Within a couple of minutes and I was hooked and was laughing and crying. The film does not really mention that at the time this film was set being Gay was only just legal in Northern Ireland. Lola Petticrew as Amber is brilliant and you just cant help loving the character. Thank you to all the cast and crew for making such a brilliant film.
This is a near-perfect, bitter-sweet coming of age comedy that everyone should watch. The two young leads are a joy, particularly Lola Petticrew, who has the makings of a very fine actor. But everyone in this film is terrific. If I were to split hairs, I would point out that the sexual politics are more reflective of the 70s than the 90s.
And the portrayals of heterosexual males are all a little, well, stereotypical. As careful as woke TV is to dismantle gay stereotypes, it appears more than eager to revive heterosexual ones. But here's the thing.
In comedy, stereotypes can be fun to play with. They can even advance the plot. This film is no exception. The clueless straight men add subtle dimensions of comedy and pathos that are as vital to the story as the sexual awakening of the two leads. There is no wearisome woke sermon being driven home here.
